Natural light in my room
Good natural light in your room is key and directly impacts study habits. Our bodies follow a vital cycle regulated by light called the circadian rhythm—from Latin circa (about) and dies (day). Essentially, it's the internal biological clock that tells your body when to stay alert and when to rest over a 24-hour cycle.
The human body is wonderful
Beyond helping us see, light is the main signal our brain uses to sync with our environment. When light enters our eyes, special retinal cells gauge
light intensity. This signal reaches the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus—our biological clock control center—triggering
chemical responses based on light levels.
When light is present, the brain signals cortisol release to energize us, raise body temperature, and wake us up. In darkness, the pineal gland produces melatonin, promoting sleep and cellular repair.
Additionally, sunlight (UV-B radiation) is required for skin to synthesize Vitamin D, essential for bone health and immunity.
Sun Exposure 🌞
Room exposure shapes its temperature and lighting profile. The sun always follows an arch rising in the East and setting in the West.
Northern Hemisphere ⬆️
In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun arches from the East through the South, setting in the West.
- Eastern Exposure (East-facing): Ideal for early risers. Receives direct, bright morning sunlight from sunrise to noon. Helps wake you up energized and warms up the room quickly after nightfall. In the afternoon, light becomes indirect, keeping the room shaded and cool for bedtime.- Western Exposure (West-facing): Opposite of East. Best for rooms used later in the day. Mornings offer soft, indirect light, keeping the room cool. Afternoons get direct sunlight from noon to sunset. In summer, this can warm up the room as the sun enters at a lower angle.
- Southern Exposure (South-facing): Ideal for colder or mild climates due to energy efficiency. Receives direct sunlight almost all day. In winter, when the sun sits lower, light pours deep into the room to warm it up. In summer, with the sun higher, rays hit at a steeper angle, making shade easy with blinds or awnings.
- Northern Exposure (North-facing): The most consistent and cool lighting profile. The room receives no direct sunlight throughout the day (except slightly during summer peaks). Offers steady, diffused lighting without harsh shadows or glare—a favorite for art studios, home offices, or computer workspaces.
Southern Hemisphere ⬇️
In the Southern Hemisphere, the sun arches from the East through the North, setting in the West.
- Eastern Exposure (East-facing): Direct morning light from sunrise, with shaded cool afternoons.- Western Exposure (West-facing): Indirect morning light with cool temperatures, followed by intense afternoon sun (the exposure that warms up rooms most before nightfall).
- Southern Exposure (South-facing): The coolest, shadiest exposure. Receives indirect diffused light, ideal for home offices or bedrooms in hot climates.
- Northern Exposure (North-facing): Direct sunlight almost all day. The brightest, warmest exposure, ideal for bedrooms and living spaces.
How can I find out my room's window exposure?
Use a compass or a compass app on your phone. Hold your phone flat in your palm with the top edge facing the window. Check heading degrees: near 0° / 360° is North, 90° is East, 180° is South, and 270° is West.
What happens at the North Pole?
At the North Pole, the sun doesn't rise every morning. From March 20 to September 22, the sun rises on the spring equinox, circling the sky 360°
at roughly the same height without ever setting—the Midnight Sun. From September 22 to March 20, the sun dips
below the horizon, starting polar night: six months of continuous darkness
(aside from twilight, moonbeams, or northern lights).
Our company is based in Spain. Going six months in darkness without seeing the sun makes us shudder!
